Tumulus excavations

As part of our ongoing research initiatives, we conducted an archaeological investigation of a burial mound (tumulus) located in the Biokovo Mountain range, Croatia. This tumulus, situated near the Vič locality in the Podglogovik valley extending to Prisika, represents a fascinating intersection of ancient and historical narratives. These stone-built mounds, circular in shape, are prominent features of the Biokovo landscape and serve as necropolises with burials spanning from the Bronze Age to more recent periods.

The excavation, carried out from November 11–17, 2024, involved the opening of a trench within the tumulus. Although this initial investigation did not reveal any burials, it provided valuable insights into the structure and stratigraphy of the mound. Of particular interest is the tumulus’ later adaptation as part of the Austro-Hungarian defensive artillery line, known as the "Topnički put" (Artillery Road), showcasing its reuse in military contexts.

In parallel with the excavation, a high-resolution 3D model of the tumulus was created. This model not only captures the intricate details of the mound but also serves as a vital tool for further analysis and public engagement. By integrating traditional archaeological methods with advanced digital technologies, the project highlights the potential for preserving and interpreting cultural heritage in innovative ways.
